Sonya's Spring Style Notes

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

Head to toe neutrals

The weather is finally changing and as they say, "April showers bring May flowers!" The pollen is in full effect here in the Southeast and the weather has us splashing in muddy puddles. I love this time of year simply for the fact of it's symbolic meaning of rebirth. Fresh. New. It's a time to freshen up our homes, but most of all our wardrobes. Shedding the layers of cashmere, wool coats and boots has me with serious Spring fever. I've scoured the S/S19 runways, magazines and boutiques and have found that there are some fun, bold, and exciting new items that we can implement into our wardrobes this Spring. For most of us, it's a flashback from younger times! Whether a shoe, which we talked about earlier, a burst of color, a silhouette/shape, or accessories there's something sure you'll find to peak your interest. To keep modern and current here are some my choices that are sure to liven up your Spring wardrobe.

Seeing Green

Emerald green is all the rage and is not a color I tend to gravitate towards, but it truly embodies what Spring is all about. Whether in a silhouette, makeup, or an accessory, it's an eye catching hue.

The Hoop

For me this accessory never left and remains one of my favorite wardrobe accessory essentials. Most women have a preference to either a stud or a hoop. Hands down, I'm a hoop girl. The hoop has been seen amongst many celebrities in varying sizes. Famously made popular by the IT hoop girl, JLo, this jewelry trend has become a cult favorite. Jewelry designer, Jennifer Fisher, has acquired quite the A-list of celebrities including former First Lady, Michelle Obama. Of course other hoops can be found at some of your favorite boutiques and shopping destinations, but I'm coveting a pair to add to my collection of gold/silver hoops. www.jenniferfisherjewelry.com

Bold Neon Colors

This is not for the faint of heart! The 1980's has returned with some style and elegance. More than a pop of color these intense saturations brighten up any neutral and the winning combination of neons and brights express personality and confidence.

It's All About the Bag

Spring gives us a chance to add an element of style with a simple handbag. No matter your style preference, there are so many options to choose from ranging in price. But, you know luxury is our jam, so take a look at some of the considerations from work to weekend.

Whether the new fanny pack; NKA (now known as) the belt bag, these bags make it effortless to be on the run unencumbered. (Gucci) the logo bag, (Fendi) or an easy cross-body (Marc Jacobs).

The Top Handle Bag

A return to elegance and femininity in this trend of lady-like top handles. From left, the longstanding recognizable geometric shape of Issey Miyake, Center, Ted Baker, and of course the epitome of feminine; Dior.

The Return of Woven

The rise of craft couture in ready-to-wear has resulted in a similar movement in accessories. Think of your 70's crochet and macrame all grown up, your not so beach bag having multi purposes, and the sustainable friendly shopper as part of your Spring bag must-haves. Left is Jacquemus, Center is by Altuzzara and Right by Kiki Handmade Boho.

Shape Up

I love the mix of shapes both in my interiors and in my styling. It keeps the eye moving and adds visual interest to the otherwise ordinary. Rectangles, Circles, Squares oh my! From the Cult Gaia fan favorites to the Staud rectangular white with black trim, and of course center stage; red Maison Margielo.

Seeing Dots and Spots

When I decided to create my signature wardrobe of black and white with pops of red last year, little did I know that spots and dots were the zeitgeist of this seasons contrasts. If black and white dots remind you of the 101 Dalmatians, then here are some other options that play for fun in your wardrobe.

The White Dress

I love anything white! I mean like seriously, I love it. White rooms, furniture, accessories, etc. you get my drift. I don't care what month of the year it is or what size I am, there is something so clean and crisp about white and this season is the perfect time to acquire the classic white dress. Itā€™s the super-chic piece that youā€™ll wear for years to come. I wear it with sandals during the day, with a soft nude or pink lip, then add a bit of my signature red lip, some platform sandals, and a beautiful handbag and I'm ready for an evening out. This wardrobe staple is worthy of a good investment in my opinion. www.netaporter.com www.zara.com

Honorable Mentions

There are a lot of trends that hit the runway each season which more times than not can cloud our head with questions of what's in? what's for me? what fits my style? what should I invest in? is this age appropriate? and the list goes on. However, there were a few trends such as the head to toe neutral on the cover of this blog truly worth mentioning. Beige is back but in a fresh, modern way along with other monochromatic hues. I love how Max Mara has done an amazing portrayal of this look. www.maxmara.com

The Scarf Print

Mixed Media Dresses

The Bermuda Short

Throwback Hair Accessories (Yep! That's a scrunchie!)

So pack up your sweaters and get out there and flirt with this Spring's trends. See what works for you. Keeping current and fresh keeps us relevant, intentional and of course stylish.
